Observations
Forecasters build tomorrow's forecast partly from public observations. Whumpf walks you through every field your center asks for, one short screen at a time, and hands it to the center the way the center takes reports.
What you can record
Location from your phone, a map pin or typed coordinates, with elevation, and how you traveled.
Recent avalanches, shooting cracks, collapsing. Tap yes for anything you saw.
One record per avalanche, or one for several alike: size, aspect, elevation, slope angle.
Hand pits and stability tests, or a full profile with snow depth and penetration.
Sky, precipitation and rate, wind and loading, blowing snow.
Captioned photos, and the terrain you stayed off and why.
Everything is saved on your phone as you go, so you can start at the car and file it from the couch.
Three ways to send it
Whumpf opens your avalanche center's public observation form inside the app and fills it in with what you wrote. You check it and tap the center's own Submit button.
Send the observation to the center's inbox with a PDF copy and your photos attached.
Save a PDF for your own records or to send yourself.
Why not post it directly? The National Avalanche Center does not currently issue API access to third-party apps, so Whumpf uses the public routes each center publishes. Your report reaches the center the same way every other public observation does, and the center decides whether and when to publish it.
