Whumpf

Heading Out · Trip plans

Not back by your worry-by time? Whumpf calls your people.

Before you go, Whumpf builds the trip plan a search and rescue team asks for and leaves it with the people at home. If you don't check in, they get an email and a phone call, and a page with everything a rescuer will ask them.

Seven steps, then send

What goes in the plan

Fill in your profile once (vehicle, gear, what you wear, emergency contacts, medical notes) and every plan after that is prefilled. Most trips are a few taps.

  1. Step 1 of 7

    Where

Pick the zone, where you parked and your route. Under More details: the area name, a trailhead pin and a Plan B.

  2. Step 2 of 7

    When

Back in 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours, or a time you pick, then how long after that your people should start worrying.

  3. Step 3 of 7

    Who's going

Add the party, or go solo.

  4. Step 4 of 7

    Getting there

How you're travelling and your vehicle, so someone can find it at the trailhead.

  5. Step 5 of 7

    In the pack

What you're wearing and carrying, and your satellite messenger's share page.

  6. Step 6 of 7

    Who knows

Choose your contacts and when they hear from Whumpf: now and if you're late, or only if you're late. Each needs an email and a phone number.

  7. Step 7 of 7

    Send

Review the plan and send it to your people.

  • Heading Out step 1: zone quick-picks, trailhead and route

    Step 1 · Where

Tap a saved zone, then the trailhead and your route.

  • Heading Out step 2: back-in hours, expected back time and worry time

    Step 2 · When

Back in a few hours, and when your people should start worrying.

  • Heading Out step 6: contacts, when they hear from Whumpf, and live location

    Step 6 · Who knows

Who gets the plan, when they hear from Whumpf, and live location.

If you're late

What happens, and when

  1. You send the plan

    Your contacts get the link

Each contact gets an email with a link to the trip page, which opens on any phone, no app needed. Chose "Only if I'm late"? Then they hear nothing unless you are.

  2. Back-by time

When you expect to be out

Nothing is sent yet. Check in with one tap when you're back, and anyone who knows about the trip is told you're out.

  3. Worry-by time

    Email and an automated call

Not checked in? Whumpf emails your contacts and calls them with an automated message.

  4. One hour later

    A second email and call

Still nothing? They hear from Whumpf again.

  5. Your contacts decide

    They act from the page

Push the worry-by time back, mark that they've heard from you, or mark that a search has started. Everyone else sees it.

A contact can extend the worry-by time up to 48 hours past your back-by time. A plan nobody closes expires 72 hours after the worry-by time, and your contacts are told. Whumpf never contacts rescuers itself: your contacts decide when to call, and their page tells them how.

What your contacts see

A page made for the worst night

  • Everything in the order a rescuer will ask for it, and who to call.
  • Where you parked on a map, your route and backup plans, the party, your vehicle, gear and clothing.
  • Your satellite messenger's share page, so they can find your last satellite position.
  • Buttons to extend the worry-by time, mark that they've heard from you, or mark that a search has started.
  • Your live position, if you turned on location sharing for this trip.

Optional

Live location, for this trip only

Off by default and chosen per trip. While the trip is open, your contacts can see where you are and which way you were heading. It stops when you check in or cancel, and the trail is deleted with the plan. It uses more battery, so it's your call each trip.

Your data

Deleted a week after you're home

Your profile stays on your phone until you send a plan. Medical notes, date of birth and home address are held in the phone's keychain. A sent plan is stored only so your contacts can see it, and it is deleted seven days after the trip closes.
