Terms of Service
Whumpf is free and built by one person in Alaska. These terms are short, but please read them: the backcountry is dangerous, and an app cannot make it less so.
Avalanche information
- Forecasts in Whumpf come from the avalanche centers through the National Avalanche Center. Whumpf shows them as published but does not write, check or guarantee them, and what you see may be out of date, incomplete, or delayed by your connection.
- Weather and station data come from third parties and may be missing or wrong.
- Always read the full forecast from your local avalanche center, and make your own decisions with the training, equipment and judgement the terrain calls for. You are responsible for your own safety and your party's.
Trip plans and alerts
- Heading Out depends on your phone, your connection, email delivery, phone networks and our providers. A message or call may be late or may not arrive. Your contacts may not see or answer it.
- Whumpf never contacts search and rescue or emergency services. If you are in trouble, call 911 or use your satellite device's SOS. Your contacts decide whether to call for help.
- Pick a worry-by time with margin, tell your contacts what to expect, and carry a satellite communicator where there's no cell service. Whumpf is a backup to telling someone your plan, not a replacement.
- Only add contacts who have agreed to be your contact.
SMS Terms
- Whumpf trip alerts texts the emergency contacts of a Whumpf trip, from (907) 202-9385, only after they ask: by texting that number, or by pressing 2 during an automated call from it. Calling the number back and pressing 2 sends one text with the link.
- The texts give the state of that trip (on a trip, overdue, checked in) and a link to its trip page, then updates about that trip until it closes. Usually a few messages per trip. No marketing.
- Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to stop texts at any time, and HELP for help, or email kai@kaiconsulting.ai.
- Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
Observations
Observations you file go to the avalanche center under its own terms. Report what you saw honestly, and don't put yourself at risk to make an observation.
No warranty
Whumpf is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. To the extent the law allows, K.AI Consulting LLC and Kai Myers are not liable for any injury, loss or damage arising from your use of the app or reliance on its information, including any avalanche, accident, missed or delayed alert, or failed check-in.
Changes and contact
These terms may change; the date above shows the latest version. Questions: kai@kaiconsulting.ai. The App Store's standard license terms also apply. How Whumpf handles your data is in the privacy policy.
